Sew Crafty Friday

I'm not so sure about this blouse, so I'm making it as a 'wearable muslin' first, using the blue floral fabric to the right. (It only cost $1.50 a yard!) This has gathers under the yoke, and I'm not sure how that will look on me. It's a fun pattern, though--you get to mix and match and play "Project Runway" with it. I'm doing the yolk with the inset, no ruffle on the hem and the 3/4 sleeves with the flounce. I'm curious to see how it comes out!
In the second photo is my cheap-o circle cutter. I was in Michael's a while back and they had this contraption where you fit a piece of fabric between two disks, then cut around them to make circles for yo-yos. I was already spending too much money there, and I thought this was such a simple concept that I could probably duplicate it.
So the other day, my husband finished up a container of oatmeal. I was about to throw it out when I thought...a-ha!
Basically, you just put the fabric on top, pop on the lid and cut around the edge. You get a 4 1/2 inch circle--which makes about a 2 inch yo-yo. And the best part is, you can store the yo-yos in the box!

I love your circle cutter idea. Very clever.
I think your blouse will turn out great. I love the pattern and how could you go wrong giving it a try with inexpensive fabric first. That's very smart about not wasting the good stuff on trial runs. Take care.
Aloha!

Thanks for your comment on my blog.
For keeping track of the rows I have one of those row counter things you stick on the end of the needle. After you finish a row you turn the dial from "0" to "1" and so on.

You are one crafty chickadee! I found your post on biblicalwomanhood. After visiting your blog, I must say I am tempted to try my hand at sewing. Again. *sigh*. There are some things I just can't seem to conquer! ;-() I do love embroidery, and I am finding that I am becoming passionate about my gardening. Please feel free to stop by my blog anytime at fourmyers.blogspot.com

The top is really cute. I bought a similiar pattern a while back, but haven't had time to make one. I can't wait to see yours!

I envy your sewing ability. My machine if for straight seams only. The rest scares me!

You are just too smart! I love the yoyo making idea. I have been tracing a lid and cutting on the line for years. I wish I had thought of that. So clever.
The shirt pattern is cute, but I'm with you about making it in 'scrap' first. Sometimes the outfits look great on the pattern, but then when you spend the time and effort into making them and they are not what you invisioned, it can be disappointing. I'm sure it will come out gorgeous and look forward to seeing how it comes along.
