Sew Crafty Friday

Shereen's back with the first Sew Craft Friday of the new year! Be sure to visit her at "Waiting for Him." (Check my blog list!)

I have two things to talk about today. Here, I'm making the pattern for a dress. This is some leftover knit I have, not the final fabric I'll use. The idea is a fitted bodice with a wide, ruched (sp?) waistband. The bottom will be a full skirt in a woven. I'm looking to make something very '50's-ish.' I'm not sure if it will work, but it will be fun doing it. I'm not sure what I'll do for sleeves. I might keep it sleeveless and wear a short jacket over it. We'll see. The first thing is to just get the pattern made. I borrowed the bodice from a pattern that fits me (my Christmas dress, as a matter of fact), but I took out the princess seam. I'll also borrow a skirt pattern for the bottom. I can mess with patterns, but I'm not so hot at drafting them from scratch.
Below is a child's top. It has a surplice neckline and ties on the sides. (The ties aren't there yet.) I'll bind it in pink. I just couldn't resist this fabric with the baby jungle animals on it! I'll also make pink pants to go with it, maybe in a pinwale corduroy.
Now, I think this is meant to be PJs. But what's up with stores that sell flannel that is not meant for children's sleepwear? Can you even buy that kind of flannel? To me, a burn is a burn. If your house is about to crash in flames, PJs aren't exactly going to help. On the other hand, in a small fire they could make all the difference. So I won't make PJs out of flannel. But it's such a shame, because there are so many cute fabrics. My question to anyone who reads this is...if you sew children's jammies, what kind of fabric do you use?

I made my grandbaby a quilt, bumper pads, etc. out of that jungle babies fabric. In fact I have some left! cute shirt. pink pants would be cute. I posted pictures a while back under the sewing category!

That pink dress is gonna be gorgeous! That you can pick, choose, alter and all that jazz is pretty impressive, if I do say so myself. That is a very flattering style too.

That pj shirt is just plain ADORABLE! Love the jungle print! The only winter pj's I ever made were of flannel. Like you said, what are a pair of pj's gonna do? ANything is flammable if you get too close to a fire! I think fleece would be SUPER comfy too.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have already taken out all of the pineapple petals and have tossed around the idea of just putting a couple of finishing rows instead of all the petals. I'm so irritated because that was supposed to be a gift to a dear friend. I just haven't been able to mention that because she reads my blog. I may just make all the petals again in the new thread, which is the same color, just not the same sheen. It's noticable to me, but may not be to her...we'll see...

The top is too cute and how sweet it will be matched with pink pants. I was able to find flannel for PJ's this year(the ones I made for Christmas) but I found that the fabric width was smaller than 44" after I washed it, so I had to adjust the pattern layout. I am so glad I always buy an extra 1/2 yard or so. How creative you are to make your own patterns. I am attempting something similar for my daughter by using pattern pieces from different patterns. Looking forward to see how your dress turns out.

I used that jungle fabric to make two quilts for my daughter's twin nephews. I used a baby blue flannel with one and a light green with the other. I am ashamed to say I didn't even think about checking to see if they were flammable. I just assumed all children's prints would be. Next time I'll check.

I love the flannel. I'm glad you asked that question because I've always wondered the same thing. I've never found anything that is useable for pj's.

Good job!

Well, it's a toss up on which is more dangerous, a burning house, or sleeping every night in chemicals right on your skin. The effects aren't the same but both are dangerous. What is put on your skin goes in. So I'm personally careful NOT to put my kids in chemically treated sleepwear. I'm sure there are plenty of people who disagree with me though. A house fire could happen to any of us, but it doesn't usually happen very often. Most people get through life without one, but they sleep in pajamas every night. Our toxic load in America keeps going up. Lots of people are dying from cancer. I guess everyone has to decide for themselves by weighing the risks out.
